Prior to the 1990s, much of what scientists knew about the human brain was based upon experimental studies of rat brains or on damaged human brains which required surgical intervention for repair. The development of technologies such as PET scans and MRIs have made it possible for scientists to study healthy human brains and how they function in learning (McGeehan, 2015).
